In light of recent news around Salesforce and their unexpected downtime, the importance of effective data backups and restoration procedures has once again been heightened in the minds of many businesses. This article aims to bring clarity to the Salesforce situation, highlight the reasons why effective backups are so critical, and explain why Asigra is the ideal solution to many backup and restoration requirements.
Salesforce is down
Salesforce is a major international organisation, in 2015 it reportedly held 18.4% of the market share for all Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools following a number of years of continued growth. The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based solution is one of the first choices for many businesses who are looking to change or take up a CRM platform and this is why an outage is such big news.
On the 10th May 2016 Salesforce suffered an outage at one of its major data centres which rendered the system inaccessible for a portion of its users. This period of downtime stretched from 13:30 on Tuesday to 9:30 (UTC) on Wednesday meaning a near full business day was lost for those customers affected.
However the problems didn’t stop there. As reported by Business Insider, the outage was caused by a problem with the database and because of this, Salesforce restored the database back to before the problem occurred which happened to be 4 hours prior to the inaccessibility. This meant that 4 hours of worth of data for a portion of their customers was lost with little to no chance of retrieval. This level of data loss could have significant financial implications and depending on the number of records being processed by the organisation, the cost could easily run into 6 figures.
Need for backups
We have spoken on many occasions about the need for comprehensive backups, whether that be for combatting modern security threats such as ransomware, or creating a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy, and this recent high profile data loss just elevates this need once more.
Whilst having backups in place wouldn’t have granted users access to the Salesforce service during the system downtime, the situation with their lost data could have been avoided as their data would have been backed up outside of the Salesforce service allowing it to be restored whenever it was required.
It is important to note that this situation is not unique to Salesforce. In many SaaS solutions customers expect that their data will be protected against accidental loss but in many cases, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) do not cover this and to ensure the highest levels of resiliency an external backup is the best course of action. This not only prevents you being tied down to one provider, it also ensures that should your SaaS provider of choice suffer from any unexpected data breach or downtime, your data will remain safe on an external third party platform.
Asigra is the Answer
